I have been alerted to the fact that my DOS games can be played on a MAC. Here are the requirements the person has who contacted me. Please note that you may be not need as much power or memory as he has. Also, I am not a MAC guy, so if you'd like to give it a try, you're more than welcome to, but I can not answer any questions.

Power Mac G3 desktop, 266 MHz
128MB RAM (42346K allocated to Virtual PC)
Virtual PC 2.1.1 (with Windows 98)
MacOS 8.5.1

Virtual PC's AUTOEXEC.BAT file is as follows:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T6
PROMPT $p$g
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:CNTX
C:\CNTX\SYSINI.EXE

Some notes...

  1. I didn't modify AUTOEXEC.BAT; this is the default file that comes with Virtual PC, so if users haven't modified the file it should work fine. The CONFIG.SYS file is the default as well.)

  2. My 42346K, or roughly 42MB, emulates a 32MB PC. Win98 wants lots of RAM, just like on a real PC, so less memory is needed to run Win95, Windows 3.1 or even DOS -- and VPC can run any of these. (I'm sure how much RAM TJW requires, but whatever that number is, add 10MB; the extra RAM is used by the emulator itself.) If users report "stuttering" or skipping in the audio, virtual memory should be turned off on the Mac side. (I have it on and the audio has skipped only once; it depends on the amount of real RAM in the Mac and the amount of virtual memory selected.)

  3. The faster the Mac, the better. A Mac with a G3 processor is recommended for any PC emulation, but a very fast 604, 604e or even a 603e should work. (I've also tried it on my Power Mac 6500 with a 250MHz 603e and my Powerbook G3 notebook running at 233 MHz; both worked fine.)

  4. SoftWindows and RealPC, the other PC emulators for the Mac, should also work -- IF people use the latest versions (SoftWindows 95 4.0 or later, SoftWindows 98, or RealPC 1.0.x). Earlier versions, to my knowledge, didn't support SoundBlaster emulation under DOS. I confess that I haven't tried these with TJW, but if they can run Doom and Quake (they can!), then these games should be no problem.
